Make something yours
A SMALL GUIDE TO BIG STORIES

Make the sequence
make sense.

A thoughtful timeline starts with the right moments. Here’s how to turn yours into a clear, useful story.

Open the timeline maker ↗

How to create a timeline in three simple steps

Start by choosing what your timeline is about. Give it a short title that tells a reader what they will discover, then add a sentence of context if the subject needs an introduction. You can begin with a blank canvas or choose an editable example. The timeline maker includes starting points for a historical journey, personal milestones, and a fictional story. Every example is a starting point: replace the dates, remove events, and write your own descriptions.

Next, add a title and year for each event. Include a month, day, or time only when you know it. The timeline maker puts your events in chronological order, so you can enter ideas as they come to you. Finally, choose an accent color and preview your work. Download a PNG for a presentation, an SVG for a scalable illustration, and a JSON backup when you want to keep editing later.

Choose the right moments, not every moment

A useful chronology has a clear question behind it. Are you explaining how an idea developed, remembering a personal journey, or checking the sequence of a story? Decide that before collecting dates. Five meaningful turning points often communicate more than fifty unrelated entries. Use a descriptive event title, then put supporting context in the detail field. A reader should understand the sequence by scanning the titles alone.

The timeline maker keeps the full description beside its event, which lets you separate the main point from the supporting explanation. When a project becomes crowded, split it into focused timelines rather than compressing every detail into one image. You can keep three timelines in a free workspace, with up to 200 events in each. Search the event list when you need to find a particular name, date, or phrase.

A history timeline maker that respects uncertain dates

Historical sources do not always give you a complete date. A book might identify a year but never mention a month. Enter the year on its own instead of inventing January 1. If a source gives only a year and month, leave the day empty. This timeline maker preserves those choices in the displayed date. Add a note in the description for an approximate date, a disputed interpretation, or a reference you want to revisit.

Use the BC selector for dates before AD 1. The timeline maker orders BC dates correctly: 320 BC comes before 80 BC, which comes before AD 12. There is no year zero in this date convention. Month lengths are validated using the proleptic Gregorian calendar, so historical dates from another calendar may need conversion. Check dates against your source before presenting them as precise historical facts.

Turn personal milestones into a story worth keeping

A life timeline can be a quiet record of change. Include a move, a friendship, a first attempt, a graduation, or the day an ordinary routine became something important. The personal template gives you a few prompts without assuming what your life should look like. Replace the example years and write in your own voice. You can use the timeline maker for a family celebration, a portfolio introduction, or a private reflection.

Think carefully about what belongs in an exported image. Your workspace is stored in this browser, but a downloaded file can be shared by anyone who receives it. Leave out addresses and other details that a public audience does not need. The timeline maker does not publish your work to a public gallery. You decide whether to download a copy and who gets to see it.

Plan a fictional chronology without losing the plot

Writers can use the story template to track what happened before the first chapter and what follows the ending. Record major turning points, then add smaller moments that explain a character’s decisions. A chronology can reveal an impossible age, a journey that takes too little time, or a promise that is never resolved. The timeline maker gives you an ordered view of those events while leaving the writing decisions to you.

For an invented world, use the year field as a consistent reference and explain the calendar convention in the timeline description. This is a simple story timeline maker, not a custom fantasy calendar engine: it does not calculate fictional months, moon phases, or parallel calendar systems. The included story is fictional sample content. Change it freely, and keep your actual manuscript in your preferred writing application.

Choose a vertical story or a horizontal journey

A vertical timeline is easy to read on a phone and gives descriptions room to breathe. A horizontal timeline can help you scan a shorter sequence from beginning to end. In the timeline maker, switch the preview layout without re-entering your events. Your dates and descriptions remain the same, and you can return to the other view whenever it suits the story.

Both views use equal spacing between events. A gap between two markers does not represent the amount of time between their dates. Read the date labels when comparing intervals. Image exports currently use a portrait layout that expands to include the full text. This keeps the timeline maker predictable for long descriptions, classroom handouts, and presentation images. For a long horizontal preview, scroll sideways to see the remaining events.

Export an image you can actually use

Choose PNG when you want a familiar image file for a slide, document, or message. Choose SVG when you need a vector image that stays sharp when resized. Both export formats include the timeline title, context, event dates, and descriptions. The timeline maker uses a simple portrait composition so that the result remains readable outside the editor. Free image exports include a small Timeline signature.

A very long timeline can exceed a browser’s practical PNG dimensions. If the PNG export reports that your image is too tall, choose SVG or divide the story into smaller timelines. The timeline maker keeps every event in your editable workspace even when a particular image format reaches its limit. Before sharing a final file, open it and check the dates, spelling, and readability at the size your audience will see.

Save locally, and keep a separate backup

Your free workspace does not require an account. The timeline maker saves changes in this browser on this device, and a status indicator tells you whether the save succeeded. Browser storage is convenient, but it is not a permanent archive. Clearing website data, using a private browsing session, or moving to a different browser can leave you without the same workspace. A local save is not cloud sync.

Download a JSON workspace backup after important changes. Keep the file with your other project documents, and use Import JSON backup to bring it into another browser. Imports add copies rather than replacing existing timelines. A PNG or SVG is a finished picture and cannot be imported as editable event data. The timeline maker deliberately offers both image export and data backup because they solve different problems.

Understand what is free and what Web Pro adds

The free timeline maker includes three saved timelines, the starting templates, both preview layouts, colors, event search, BC dates, and image exports with a signature. You can export and import JSON backups without paying. There is no signup wall before you can try the editor. The free version is intended to let you make a complete, useful timeline and take the result with you.

Web Pro adds more space, up to 100 timelines in a browser workspace, and image exports without the signature. Pricing and checkout availability appear on the pricing page. When checkout is enabled, the price comes from the configured payment provider. The timeline maker never unlocks Pro just because a payment page says success: the server verifies the purchase. Keep your Web Pro license key private and save it for restoration in another browser.

Take your interest in timelines to iPhone

Prefer creating on your phone? Explore the companion Timeline app for iOS through the App Store link. The mobile app focuses on creating and organizing timelines with local storage, flexible dates, and image export. The web timeline maker is a convenient place to work with a larger screen, while the app offers a separate mobile experience for your next idea.

Web and iOS data are currently separate. A Web Pro purchase does not unlock an iOS purchase, and the web workspace does not automatically appear in the app. Do not delete your web backup expecting a transfer to have happened. The timeline maker makes this distinction clear so you can choose the product that fits your workflow without assuming synchronization or shared purchase benefits.

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW

Good questions.
Simple answers.

Is this timeline maker free?+

Yes. Create up to three timelines, customize colors, and export PNG or SVG images with a small signature. JSON backup and import are also free. Web Pro offers more timeline slots and image exports without the signature.

Do I need an account to start?+

No. Open the timeline maker and start editing. Your workspace is saved in your current browser. Download a JSON backup to move your editable work to another browser or keep an independent copy.

Can I create a timeline with BC dates?+

Yes. Choose BC when entering an event. The timeline maker sorts BC and AD dates together in chronological order. Enter the year as a positive number; there is no year zero. Months, days, and times are optional.

Can I use this timeline maker for a school project?+

Yes. Start with the history example or a blank timeline, replace the sample events, and export an image for your work. Check your dates against reliable sources and put references in your event descriptions when needed.

Will my timeline appear in search results?+

No. Your editable timelines stay in browser storage, and the editor is excluded from indexing. Public information pages explain the timeline maker, but your workspace is not published as a public webpage. Pro image export sends the selected timeline to the server for rendering.

Does the web timeline maker sync with the iOS app?+

Not yet. Web and iOS have separate storage and purchases. You can visit the App Store to explore the mobile app, but a Web Pro license does not include iOS premium access.
